ESPR for Tyres
Core Thesis
Tyres are a priority product group under the ESPR Working Plan and are already subject to an ongoing preparatory study. Future ESPR measures may complement tyre labelling rules and create a broader framework for durability, abrasion, retreadability, recycled content, substances and product information.
Executive Summary
Tyres is one of the priority final product groups identified in the first ESPR and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025-2030. The Working Plan does not yet create final product-specific obligations, but it signals where the Commission will consider future ecodesign and information requirements through delegated acts.
The Commission has launched a preparatory and impact assessment support study for tyres, started in March 2025 and expected to be completed in August 2027.
The tyre study examines possible ecodesign measures including lifecycle environmental impacts, carbon and environmental footprints, natural rubber, substances of concern, recycled content, tyre abrasion, durability, reliability, reparability, retreadability, collection and recyclability.
Executive insight For tyres, ESPR readiness should start before the delegated act is finalised. The hardest work is usually not interpreting the legal text, but building reliable product, material, supplier, sustainability and end-of-life data.
